² First known version.

³ Jah Roy on vocals.

From the stage1 moment
Icculus · At their first recorded show on Halloween night, Phish turned to the prophet in the penultimate slot of the second set. Unlike at Rosemont Horizon (the only other Halloween Icculus to date), the holiday itself is barely mentioned in a fairly standard rendition of the song.

“TREY: This next song is a story of a great, great, great man. We thought that it was important that it was important, on Halloween… On Halloween it's always important to remember this man because he was born on Halloween. In …”

transcript: phish.in

This show was a co-bill with The Joneses. Trey and Mike quoted Fuck Your Face and Minkin during the Melt the Guns intro. Halley’s Comet featured Richard Wright on vocals. Have Mercy featured Jah Roy on vocals. This show contained the first known version of David Bowie.

Bustouts and debuts are Phish.net’s gap on the row. Version rankings and “hot this year” are counted over the shows in THIS archive — not all of history until the backfill finishes — and lengths are phish.in’s timings. Rarities use Phish.net’s all-time play count; long odds are shows played since the song’s debut divided by its plays (see the rarity index on LizardStats).

Straight off the phish.in timings, longest first. What this can’t tell you yet is whether any of these is a big version — that needs each song’s own history to compare against, which is the next thing to pull in. After that: phish.in publishes a jam-start marker per track, so the composed section and the improvisation can be separated and measured properly. That’s what belongs in this tube.
